Language A1 SL self-taught: send choice of authors and works for oral examination parts 2 and 4 (Form 1/A1ST is available for languages that do not use Roman script)
More than 80 different first languages have been offered forexamination as part of the IBO’spolicy of encouraging students tomaintain strong ties to their owncultures. Students ideally develop strong written and oral skills, respect for the literary heritage of their first languages,and an international perspective. Every diploma candidate is required to include a group 1 language, either HL or SL. Where no teacher is available, a student may be allowed to study language A1 as a self-taught candidate at SL only.The range of texts studied in language A1 courses is broad:students grow to appreciate a language’s complexity, wealthand subtleties in a variety of contexts. Confidence andcompetence in oral and written communication skills arefostered. One of the explicit aims of the language A1 groupis to engender a lifelong interest in literature and a love forthe elegance and richness of human expression, an appreciation of change and continuity as well as ofsimilarity and difference. Students evaluate the major theories, concepts and research findings of the respective
disciplines and learn each discipline’s methodology.Examination papers are available in English, French and Spanish or the students self-taught native or "best" language.
